Are you experiencing increased family conflict due to concerns regarding an aging parent or a loved one who has become ill?  Very few families are fully prepared for the circumstances that relate to increased care needs of family members.  Let’s face it, no one really wants to think about a something negative happening to someone we love.  It’s a difficult subject that most families avoid addressing until something happens that forces attention to the matter.

Elder or family-care  mediation can be a very useful and productive process for families.   Times of crisis are when families need each other the most and yet often times, as individuals become overwhelmed, exhausted, and frustrated, communication breaks down, bad feelings start to fester, and families start to divide.  Mediation offers a solution to bring family members together to address issues and come up with satisfying, workable solutions regarding the care of aging or ill loved ones.

An elder-care or family-care mediator is a trained neutral who employs mediation techniques to facilitate a controlled dialog among family members to help the parties stay focused on the important issues and come up with good solutions that work for the family.   The mediation process tends to be much less expensive and more satisfying than legal processes and allows for families to express their thoughts and concerns in a safe, controlled, and supportive environment. Our mediators have extensive legal experience in family, guardianship, and elder-care law.

What Type of Matters Can Be Addressed in Elder or Family-Care Mediation?

Typical types of issues addressed in family-care mediation include short and long-term care decisions.  Financial matters can be addressed including those related to real and personal property. If legal decisions need to be considered such as obtaining a Guardianship over a loved one, that can be discussed too.  Participation in mediation can occur via teleconferencing or videoconferencing or like methods, so that  even interested parties who do not reside in the area can participate too.
